Home Assistant ZBT-1

The Home Assistant ZBT-1 USB dongle is a physical radio adapter/hardware dongle that brings you Zigbee and Thread protocol support to any Home Assistant-powered platform, such as Raspberry Pi and Home Assistant Green hub. Based on the Silicon Labs EFR32MG21 chip, the USB dongle allows you to run both Thread and Zigbee with a simple stick and also provides Matter over Thread support.

Home Assistant SkyConnect is designed to be the complete solution for Home Assistant users. The device allows easy connection to the Zigbee protocol and in the future will also support the Matter standard via a firmware update from Home Assistant. The product supports Over-The-Wire (OTW) firmware updates via a USB interface, allowing quick and easy updates to both protocols. The device is an EFR32 Series 2 adapter (Silicon Labs EZSP v8), which transmits at up to +20 dBm. When connected to the included USB extension cable, it supports USB 2.0 at full speed. Home Assistant will provide additional software (Add-on) that will communicate with Ember protocols for Zigbee and Matter. Nabu Casa will provide regular firmware updates to improve the user experience with the Zigbee/Matter adapter. The USB stick provides a plug and play experience, is tightly integrated with the Zigbee Home Automation integration and is also suitable for beginners. It is compatible with the Home Assistant platform running on a Raspberry Pi or on a Home Assistant Green hub. The Home Assistant USB gateway model ZBT-1 is currently compatible with Matter via the Thread protocol, but full integration is still under development.

FEATURES:

  • 2.4GHz multi-protocol USB transceiver
  • Zigbee / Thread / Matter
  • USB 2.0 full speed
  • TX power up to +20 dBm
  • Silabs EFR32MG21 Wireless SoC
  • Support for Over-The-Wire (OTW) updates

Two protocols running at the same time

  • Dual-protocol operation (Zigbee, Thread)
  • Adapted for Home Assistant, useful in all cases
  • The future wireless device
  • Low-risk solution for gateway devices
The hardware is based on the Silicon Labs EFR32MG21 SoC (the same chip as in the Sonoff ZBDongle-E), a 2.4GHz radio MCU with multi-protocol support for IEEE 802.15.4, which enables simultaneous Zigbee 3 operation.Local communication will be via an embedded USB-to-UART interface (probably Silabs CP210x series). The Home Assistant / Nabu Casa team is developing several add-ons that will allow these adapters to work simultaneously as a Zigbee coordinator and as an OpenThread Border Router (OTBR) for Thread-based Matter/CHIP devices. Communication will be done locally via a USB-serial port using the OpenThread RPC Spinel interface via UART. The Silabs EmberZNet EZSP interface for Zigbee via zigpy libraries will allow support for Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA) integration without additional setup.
